Midtown Madness lets you chart your own path as you race your friends through the streets of Chicago. The course provides a bit of a challenge, as you take to alleys, neighborhoods, and even buildings, to get to the finish line before your challenger. Adding to all this are obstacles like traffic, weather conditions, law enforcement, and pedestrians.

- Midtown Madness Setting: A partial but detailed recreation of Chicago, featuring real-world landmarks and interactive objects.
- Midtown Madness Vehicles: Includes a variety of licensed vehicles ranging from a Volkswagen New Beetle to a Freightliner Century Class truck. The Panoz GTR-1 is the fastest car in the game.
- Gameplay Modes:
- Cruise: Free-roam exploration with customizable traffic, weather, and police density.
- Blitz: A time-trial mode where you must reach a destination through specific checkpoints.
- Checkpoint: Races against opponents where you can choose your own path between markers.
- Circuit: Traditional racing on closed-off tracks within the city.
- Chaos Mechanics: The game became famous for its physics, allowing players to crash into traffic, send objects flying, and use heavy vehicles to plow through the city. Unlike later games, pedestrians are present but cannot be run down.
